Say what you will about it, but I welcome smiles in punk – especially when it’s Matt and Kim. They’re both good people and that shows through their personalities on stage and through their music. We all fell in love with their spastic tunes on their self-titled debut album and they took it up a notch with their latest album, Grand.
They’re now getting ready to release their third studio album, Sidewalks, on November 2 of this year. The first single, “Cameras,” was just released and I was a bit shocked to hear how different it sounded from the songs on Grand. It definitely still has the bounce I’m used to hearing from the couple, however, it is lacking the brightness I usually hear on both the keys and drums. For the most part, it sounds more electronic than anything. There’s just a lot in there that sounds pre-sampled on Matt’s part in programming.
Yet, with all those differences I still like it. Actually, I like it a lot. There’s a slight dip into R&B with those beats and with the right editing and selection from the chorus, this song could make a stellar sample for a rap song. (This also doesn’t surprise me since Matt was always talking about Usher’s “Love In This Club” and Kim would always be inviting people to after parties where they would dance to some “dirty” R&B songs.)
It’s also a bit more mature than any of their older material. There’s unfortunately not as much sparkle as before but there’s no doubt that it’s a great song. The song will definitely stand out among others in a collection. The lyrics from the chorus, “No time for cameras/We’ll use our eyes instead/No time for cameras/We’ll be gone when we’re dead,” stick with me after I’m done listening to the song.
Take a listen to the “Cameras” below!
