Oh, my. JAXART Records has done it again. The label that has always displayed superb taste in music has put out records by artists such as The Henry Clay People, The Parson Red Heads and more in the past, and has now added two new excellent bands on to their roster: POLLS and Slow Animal. There will be a post on Polls in a bit, so let’s focus our attention on the two-piece, Slow Animal.
With a free EP titled “theFUNsun” available on Bandcamp, there is really no excuse to not download and swim in the lo-fi rock goodness of this New Jersey band. There’s just enough reverb on the catchy guitar riffs underneath dreamy and 60s-esque oohs and ahs making the entire EP a quick but fulfilling listen. (Each song on the EP is barely longer than 2.5 minutes but the melodies that ring in my ears afterward are quite nice.) Despite the first half of their name, there’s nothing slow about this band.
Take a listen to “Dolt Heart,” the last track of the four songs but also check “Saturday Mourning” out which comes as a b-side on the 7″ version of “theFUNsun.” It’s available now through JAXART. (You can also pick it up at Origami Vinyl, Angelenos.) Sure, Pitchfork may already have them on their radar but this is one band that deserves the hype. They’re currently making the trek from the Garden State out to the west coast and should be in SoCal by July 22nd.
