LCD Soundsystem‘s James Murphy recently said that the band may be retiring after this tour. It doesn’t mean he’ll stop making music but he won’t be fronting the massive group that has become a punk electro dance phenomenon anymore. It’s understandable since he wants to get back to producing, and most importantly, nurture his own label, DFA (which has a full roster of artists such as Holy Ghost!, Free Energy, YACHT, Hot Chip and more).
There are many reasons why people adore LCD Soundsystem. Murphy has done quite the job of gaining a cult following for this project of his. I was lucky enough to experience the band up at Sasquatch Festival and it was absolutely surreal to see a massive sea of bodies losing their minds to favorites like “All My Friends.” I personally dig Murphy and his music because he knows how to write songs about real issues concerning his music and critical perception in a tasteful manner. There’s aren’t too many tongue-in-cheek clichés going on there.
The track, “You Wanted A Hit” is definitely one of these songs that talk about the media and the band. The original is over nine minutes long but Soulwax, a Belgian electro band who is mostly known for their mash-ups and remixes, have managed to shorten the song down to around seven minutes. I assume that most people don’t care too much for the long intro anyway but what blows me away are the heavy bass synths that Soulwax use to drive the remix. The original beat is still layered on top but that hefty synth line is what makes it epic. Check it out below!
