Earlier this week, I was lucky enough to catch of a show of School of Seven Bells where they mostly played their new material. My two favorite ambient ladies of LA, VOICEsVOICEs also opened up for them but what I was really blown away by was Sacramento, California-based band, Sister Crayon.
Although they had numerous technical difficulties during their set, it was still obvious that this group was incredibly entrancing with Terra Lopez’s silky smooth vocals and hypnotic beats. Lopez does not only has a great range (making me think she was probably the star of her high school choir – most famous musicians were) but she also has an energy on stage even though Sister Crayon’s music isn’t exactly dance music. There are ethereal elements meshed into some R&B vibes and experimental rock and I’m just shocked I haven’t been a fan of theirs before this since they’re signed to a great label called Manimal Vinyl.
