Lissie: Everywhere I Go

Last month, I went to the Bootleg Theater with a friend to check out an artist by the name of Lissie. No last name (at least for her stage name). Just Lissie. She’s also not Lissy Trullie. Although that Lissy is great as well, this post is going to focus on Lissie.

When you look at this photo above, you see a frail looking blond, right? Well, her vocals are anything but weak. With a voice that sounds like a combination of Neko Case, Petra Haden and Cat Power, Lissie is a folk artist who may sound like she only fits in the “country” genre at first. However, with a few listens you can hear distinct characteristics that pull her out of such boundaries.

Before I had gone to see her, I was familiar with her song, “Everywhere I Go,” a gorgeous and heartfelt ballad, but seeing and hearing her perform it live was absolutely breathtaking. Although she was wearing glasses much too large for her face on stage that night, the sound of how her voice breaks on certain notes interests me in an unusual way. I’m always curious to hear just how big of range she has, and it’s wonderfully showcased in this song.

Listen to “Everywhere I Go” below and hear it for yourself. I have no doubt you’ll want to grab the mp3 afterward.
